If a pre-owned Polestar has been on your list, fall is a good moment to get serious. Trade-ins picked up over the summer are landing on the lot, the heat that stresses EV range is easing, and the certified pre-owned selection at Polestar Los Angeles is currently built around recent Polestar 2 models. We laid out what the Certified by Polestar program includes in our overview of the certified pre-owned program last month. This post is about the next step: how to shop for and evaluate one specific car so you drive home confident.

Why Fall Works in Your Favor

Dealership lots turn over as the calendar moves toward year-end. Summer lease returns and trade-ins get inspected and certified, and shoppers who researched all summer finally act. Selection changes week to week, so it's worth checking the current certified list rather than assuming what's here.
Fall is also easy EV weather in Southern California. Your first months of ownership land in the part of the year when range is most predictable, which gives you time to settle into charging habits before the next heat wave. And if you've been watching for a used-EV rebate, both Southern California Edison and LADWP list pre-owned EV rebate programs for their residential customers, subject to eligibility and funding. Both require the specific vehicle to appear on the program's approved list, and LADWP applies a model-year window, so confirm the exact car qualifies before you count on a rebate.

A Quick Refresher on What Certified Means

The Polestar program is called Certified by Polestar. Per polestar.com/us, a certified vehicle has passed a 112-point inspection performed by Polestar technicians and comes with a CARFAX® Vehicle History Report, along with the CARFAX® Buyback Guarantee. It carries an additional two years of limited warranty coverage with unlimited miles, which begins when the original new-vehicle warranty expires or at the purchase date, whichever is later, and which in all cases expires six years from the commencement of the New Car Warranty. Scheduled factory maintenance is covered while the certified warranty is active, and 24/7 Polestar roadside assistance is included. Our Certified by Polestar program guide goes deeper, and all warranties are limited, so ask us for the coverage booklet when you visit.

How to Evaluate the Exact Car You're Considering

Certification tells you the car met a standard. These questions tell you about this car.
Ask for the battery state of health. Our technicians can read the high-voltage battery with Polestar diagnostic equipment. Ask to see the result and what it means relative to a new pack. This is the single most important number on any used EV.
Check the software version. Polestar delivers improvements over the air, and a car that's current will charge, precondition, and drive the way Polestar intends. Ask whether all available updates have been applied.
Confirm the charging hardware. Have the onboard charger, charge port, and included cables tested. Ask which adapters, if any, come with the car.
Read the CARFAX® report with the salesperson. Look at prior registration state, service history, and any accident record. A car serviced locally through LA heat has a history our team can explain.
Ask how the warranty carries over. Confirm when the original new-vehicle warranty ends for that VIN, when the certified coverage starts, and what's covered on the battery and drive units.
Look at tires and brakes. EV weight and instant torque wear tires faster. Regen means friction brakes see less use, so check for rotor corrosion. Ask what was inspected and what was replaced during reconditioning.
Check the 12-volt battery. It powers the car's electronics and is the most common cause of a used EV that won't wake up. Ask when it was last tested or replaced.
Our earlier guide on what to look for in a pre-owned EV covers the general version of this list.

Certified Versus Standard Pre-Owned

Not everything on our pre-owned lot is certified. We also list newer pre-owned Polestar vehicles, including 2025 Polestar 3 models that are still under the original new-vehicle warranty but haven't gone through the certification process. The tradeoff is straightforward: a certified Polestar 2 comes with the inspection, the added coverage, and included scheduled maintenance. A non-certified pre-owned Polestar 3 may be the newer car with more remaining factory warranty. Either way, ask the same questions above. Browse the certified pre-owned inventory to see which cars carry the program.

The Test Drive Is Part of the Inspection

Take the car on a route that looks like your commute. In the Valley that might mean Sepulveda Boulevard stop-and-go, a stretch of the 405, and a hill. Pay attention to how regenerative braking feels at different settings, whether the cabin is quiet at freeway speed, and how the Google built-in system responds. Note the displayed range at the start and finish and compare it to the distance you drove. That's a real-world data point no listing can give you.

Fitting the Numbers to Your Budget

Use our payment calculator to explore an estimated monthly figure for the term you have in mind. When you're ready, our finance center team can walk through options, and you can start a finance application online. Approval and terms depend on your credit profile and are determined during the application, not promised in advance. If you have a car to trade, we'll appraise it during your visit.
