Understanding how Southern California heat and heavy A/C usage affect your Polestar range can help you plan more efficient summer drives across Los Angeles. Proactive climate control maintenance and smart use of features like preconditioning support consistent performance during the warmer months.

At Polestar Los Angeles, our factory-trained Polestar technicians regularly answer questions about EV range and battery performance during summer. When temperatures in the San Fernando Valley climb above 100 degrees, your vehicle works harder to keep both the cabin and the lithium-ion battery pack cool. Just as a gasoline engine consumes more fuel when the A/C is running, an EV draws additional power from the battery for climate control, which can temporarily reduce overall driving range.

How Heat, A/C, and EV Batteries Interact

The Polestar 2 is equipped with a liquid-cooled thermal management system designed to protect the high-voltage battery from temperature extremes. When you enter a hot cabin and turn the A/C to maximum, the compressor pulls power from the main battery pack.

Initial cool-down phase: The most energy-intensive moment for the A/C system is cooling a hot cabin down from a high temperature to a comfortable setting. Dropping the cabin from 120 degrees to 70 degrees uses meaningful energy.

Steady-state operation: Once the desired temperature is reached, the system needs much less power to maintain it, which stabilizes energy consumption during longer drives along the 101 freeway.

Preconditioning: A Key Feature for LA Heat

Preconditioning is one of the most useful features for preserving range in Southern California summers. Through the Polestar app, you can warm up or cool down the cabin while your vehicle is still plugged into a charger. Using grid power for the initial cool-down means your battery state stays preserved for the drive itself.

Per the Polestar owner's manual, preconditioning is available when the high-voltage battery is sufficiently charged. If preconditioning runs while the vehicle is not plugged in, range will be affected since the energy is drawn from the battery rather than from the grid.

When you unplug and drive away from a preconditioned vehicle, you start with a comfortable cabin and your preferred state of charge intact. Note that Polestar generally recommends charging to 80 to 90 percent for daily use, with 100 percent charges reserved for longer trips. The preconditioning timer can be set in the Polestar app or in the vehicle settings.

Range Assistant and Eco Climate

The Polestar 2 includes a Range Assistant app available in the center display, which shows current energy consumption, estimated range based on driving patterns, and indications of high energy demand to help support more efficient driving.

Within the Range Assistant, the Eco Climate function reduces climate system demand on the battery to help extend driving range when you want to prioritize efficiency over maximum cabin comfort. This is a useful tool on longer summer drives when range matters more than cabin chill.

Why Climate Control Maintenance Matters

Even the most advanced climate systems benefit from routine maintenance. An A/C system that is struggling will run the compressor longer and harder, drawing more energy from the battery than necessary.

The dust and air quality in Los Angeles can clog cabin air filters over time, restricting airflow and adding load to the blower motor. Routine cabin air filter inspection helps maintain consistent airflow through the vents. Ensuring your vehicle's thermal management coolant is at the proper level also supports long-term battery health by allowing the cooling system to function as designed.
